About Dan Ross
Dan Ross is originally from Ilwaco, WA. Born at the mouth of the Columbia River, fishing runs in his blood and has spent the better part his life traveling and fishing all over the great state of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, and as far south as Colombia. Dan has spent the last 15 years in Costa Rica – what Dan calls the “best fishery in the world”.
Dan’s experience in Costa Rica fishing is extensive having fished from the south end of Costa Rica (Golfito) to the North Region (Papagayo), and everywhere in between including the Caribbean side; one of his favorite spots for some of the hottest Tarpon fishing in the Americas. From hook size and brand, to the size of leader and leader material, to tried and trusted techniques for hooking Bill Fish, even the type of boats themselves are factored, including which ones raise fish and which ones do not. Dan’s fleet of Maverick yachts are actually built right here in Jaco, Costa Rica and are some of the finest boats for fishing Costa Rica’s deep waters.
Dan’s success at putting fishermen on the fish comes from unparalleled experience in Costa Rica fishing. He couples clients with the best captain and perfect boat for their skill level and fishing plans to successfully take sportfishing enthusiasts like you on a fishing trip that will challenge and deliver an unforgettable experience. Dan’s’ personal fleet captains as well as the captains he works with, all have years of fishing experience and truly live for the sport fishing in Costa Rica.
Dan’s deep knowledge of the many predators species and their feeding and movement patterns help you target the species and with the style of fishing you prefer. The only thing Dan enjoys more than having a Marlin crush his fly is successfully planning client trips so they too can enjoy targeting your big game fish of choice.
If you are looking for a deep sea adventure of hunting and releasing Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Roosterfish, Snapper, Grouper, Tarpon, or any of many other species of fish in Costa Rica give Dan a call, he is always happy to talk with others about Costa Rica fishing opportunities.

A Personal Note from Dan Ross on Big Game Fly Fishing
Costa Rica fishing is an unbelievable and even a humbling experience for fly fisherman of all calibers. Hunting billfish offshore with a fly rod is by far one of the most exciting experiences any fisherman could wish for. Imagine a 100 pound sailfish or even a 300-400 pound blue marlin in all-out attack mode, chasing your fly off the back of the boat… after you hook one of these big game beasts you will find out, or be reminded why these beasts are the ultimate sportfishing trophy.
Fishing offshore, for billfish, we frequently catch Dorado (mahi mahi) and tuna as well. We have landed numerous Dorado over 50 pounds on fly rods, and it’s not uncommon to catch as many as 12 of these fighters in one spot without putting the boat back in gear!
Tuna is another favorite of mine and a great fish to catch with fly rod. It’s always exciting to run into a school of hungry tuna up to 20 pounds ready to aggressively chase your fly. Even the pickiest tuna will take a swipe at one my specially designed tube flies. We have landed over 20 tuna in a matter of minutes on fly rods.
Tarpon are spectacular in their jumping and fighting ability and there is no place better in the world than the Rio Colorado River – one of my favorite hot spots. Here you will find awesome sight fishing and fly fishing opportunities. The prize fish are huge, high flying, aggressive strikers and abundant.
I have spent the last fifteen years fly-fishing Costa Rica, and have personally fished with a number of Captain’s up and down the coast. This experience has taught me that when it comes to fly fishing, not all Captains are created equal. We only use Captains with demonstrated knowledge and success of fly fishing for billfish.
Whether you want to chase billfish or tarpon, please come down and let’s go fishing in Costa Rica, there is nothing I would enjoy more than helping you catch the fish of a lifetime!
